Armor All history

Armor All originates from 1962 when the chemist Joe Palcher invented the Armor All Protectant. Joe was convinced to put the product into production, resulting in the commercially available Tri-don (No-Dirt spelled backwards) in 1966. 1972 was the year that Alan Rypinski bought the rights to Joe’s company, renamed the product Armor All Protectant and made the product available for all fellow car enthusiasts everywhere. The product was then patented in 1976 and received a second patent in 1979 for its exclusive infusion method. Armor All was bought by MsKesson in 1979, taking the company public in 1980. In 1982 the Armor All brand launched a wash specifically formulated for cars. Followed by the Tire Foam Protectant in 1992, and a wheel cleaner in 1994. In the following years several other products where developed and launched, like the usage of gels and wipes. Chlorox bought the company in 1996, and sold it to Avista Capital Partners in 2010 who changed the name into Armored AutoGroup. The headquarters was also moved to Danbury. 2015 brought a big change for the company as Spectrum Brands aqcuires AutoGroup from Avista Capital Partners. This makes Armor All part of the Spectrum Brands Global AutoCare division.
